GENESEO — Robert “Bob” George Verplaetse, 68, of Geneseo, passed away on Friday, Jan. 10, 2020, at Generations at Rock Island Nursing Home, Rock Island. A celebration of life will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020, at Vandemore Funeral Homes & Crematory – Geneseo Chapel. Deacon Harley Chaffee will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Robert Verplaetse Memorial Fund.
Bob was born on June 22, 1951, the son of George and Margaret (Kleinau) Verplaetse, in Geneseo. He graduated from Geneseo High School in 1969. He was as an over-the-road truck driver. He enjoyed watching the Chicago Bears and Cubs, playing softball, bowling and golf.
Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Jason (Melissa), Taylor Ridge, Ill.; grandchildren, Jaylee, William, Colin, Kimber; brother, John (Sandra) Verplaetse, Cambridge; sister, Mary Fritch, Reynolds, and Ruth Neuleib, Kewanee.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Margaret, and brothers-in-law, Leland Neuleib and Harvey Fritch.
NEW BOSTON — Helen Boyer, 96, of New Boston, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2020, at Genesis Medical Center, Aledo. Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Speer Funeral Home, Aledo, with visitation one hour prior to services. Private burial will be in Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa, Iowa. Helen Louise was born on Jan. 30, 1923, in Grinnell, Iowa, to Ross and Elsie (Paul) Esler. She married Roy Carmichael, later divorcing. Helen was married to Merle Boyer for 30 years. He preceded her in death.
Helen enjoyed bowling, tending her home and gardening, especially flowers, and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She had a favorite Yorkie canine companion, Dukie.
Helen is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Donna Carmichael, of Taylor Ridge; four grandchildren and spouses, Tami and Brad, Candi and Troy, Robert and Gina, and Richard; stepgrandchild, Sherri and Carl; and several great- and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; one brother; her husband; and her daughter, Judy Baltimore.

ROCK ISLAND — Brenda L. Johanson, 67, of Rock Island, passed away Monday, Jan. 13, 2020, at Silver Cross Nursing, Rock Island.
A Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in Moline Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be left to American Cancer Society or Kings Harvest.
Brenda was born on Aug. 12, 1952, in Moline, the daughter of Burley and Dolores (Webb) Hutton. She married Bill Johanson on Oct. 24, 1970, in Moline.
She had been employed at B and W Home Improvement, Moline, and formerly at several flooring stores in the Quad Cities.
Brenda loved spending time with her family and fur babies, Piston and Tank. She was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan, loved old Mustangs and the Beach Boys.
Survivors include her husband, Bill; children, Lynn (Cory) Reiff, Davenport, Christin (Shawn) Lambert, East Moline, Bill (Trisha) Johanson, East Moline; grandchildren, Markus, Kayla, Gavin, Kaylee, Jaiyhdenn, Grant, Lane and Madelyn; great-granddaughter, Alaina; siblings, Robert Hutton, Albany, Roger Hutton, Florida, and Mary Lowe, Davenport.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Jim Hutton.
EAST MOLINE — George Cyriel Lambrecht, 93, East Moline, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2020, at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Silvis. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery, where the East Moline American Legion Post 227 will conduct military honors. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, where he was a member, or to the Wounded Warrior Project of the Quad Cities.
George was born Dec. 29, 1926, in East Moline, the son of Cyriel Lambrecht and Bertha Goethals Lambrecht. He married the love of his life, Rachael Jackson Lambrecht, on Aug. 22, 1953, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rock Island.
George enjoyed golf. He learned the game as a young caddy working at Short Hills Country Club in East Moline. Of all the courses he played over the years, he stated that Short Hills was his favorite. He attended United Township High School where he and his high school golf team placed at state. After graduation, George enlisted into the U.S. Navy where he served for two years as a Gunner's Mate on one of the Navy's Landing Craft Support ships in the Pacific. After returning home from his service, he became a fire fighter with the East Moline Fire Department. He retired as the department's Assistant Fire Chief 25 years later. Over the years, George also sold hundreds of homes as a Realtor in the area. He loved his family and his country.
Those left to cherish his memories include his sister, Margaret Lambrecht Drobushevich; brother, Al Lambrecht; children, Joan Lambrecht Cook, Colona, John (Nicki) Lambrecht, East Moline, Dan (Valare) Lambrecht, East Moline, Dave (LaTres) Lambrecht, Silvis; grandchildren, Kevin Cook, Joe Lambrecht, Matt Cook, Jay Lambrecht, Scott Lambrecht, Marc Crawmer, Adam Lambrecht, Tyler Lambrecht, Jacob Lambrecht and Ariana Lambrecht; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; sisters, Helen Lambrecht Verstraete, Gabrielle Lambrecht Dopler; brother, Ralph Lambrecht; and daughter, Ann Lambrecht Hardin.

ROCK ISLAND — Archie Lee Spann Jr., 76, of Rock Island, passed away Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020, at his residence.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, 2020, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service. Burial will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island, with military honors. Memorials may be made to the family.
Archie was born on June 26, 1943, in Wilson, Ark., the son of Archie G. Spann Sr. and Minnie Shaw, as well as stepfather, Isaac T. Vaughn, who played a big part of his life growing up. He married Juanita Ivy on July 4, 1971, in Louisville, Miss. Archie worked for John Deere Harvester Works as a drill press operator. Archie is a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed motorcycle riding, hanging out with his friends at the park and spending time with family.
Archie is survived by his, wife, Juanita Spann; children, Keith Spann, Archie B. Spann, Kevin (Lisetta Coleman-Spann) Spann, Minnie (Damon Locke) Spann-Locke and Chasidy Spann; grandchildren, Armando, Relmilio, Asya, Reuben, Odessa, Jahleel, Davoria, Damari and Da'Montrez; a host of great-grandchildren; siblings, Thomas “Tony” L. (Denise) Spann; Mabel Gibbs; Elaine Ross; Janice Gouse; James B. (Patricia) Vaughn Sr. and Issac (Bessie “Neicie”) Christopher. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Dorothy Christopher.
KANSAS CITY — Velda M. Jones, 100, of Kansas City, KS, formerly of Moline, passed away Friday, January 10, 2020 at the home of her daughter, Kathleen.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:15am Thursday, January 16, 2020 at Sacred Heart Church, Moline with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials can be made to Sacred Heart Church, Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters.
Velda was born May 4, 1919 in Benton, WI, the daughter of Francis B. and Lucy Regina (Fox) Smith. She married Ralph H. Jones on June 8, 1940 in Davenport, IA. He preceded her in death on January 22, 1996.
Velda was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Moline and enjoyed reading, playing cards and watching sports, especially college basketball and professional football and was a Notre Dame fan.
Survivors include her children, Kathleen Ann (Samuel) Reid, Kansas City, KS, Lynn Jones, Kansas City, MO and Lawrence (Linda) Jones, Springfield, MO; grandchildren, Renee Reid, Shawnee, KS, Jennifer (Jeff) Chastain, Shawnee, KS; great grandchildren, Emily Garvey and Ashley, Brittany and Camden Chastain and a great great granddaughter, Olive Genora.
